May 25/26, 2011 (Gold/Blue) FINAL EXAMS

Honors English 10

G3 (Wed) and B2/B4 (Thurs) - Final Exams today.  All Textbooks or borrowed materials are DUE.  All absence work is DUE.  I have been cleaning out your benchmark folders, so if you have not received essays and research papers back from me, please stop by and get those sometime in the next two days.    I have really enjoyed my two years with all of you, and I hope you have a wonderful summer vacation! :)

G2 (Wed) and B3 (Thurs) - Final Exams and Binder Quizzes today.  Comparison charts for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Odyssey DUE.  Review Sheets for the Final Exam DUE.  All Textbooks or borrowed materials are DUE.  All absence work is DUE.  It has been great getting to know all of you.  Have a great summer!

G4 - Final Presentations wrapped up today.  Students taking the course for credit through IU were asked to complete some surveys.  I am still working on your Final Drafts of the Trend paper and your participation scores for Homework and Draftwork.  I will get the scores posted and papers back to you as soon as I can... it may be at commencement rehearsal, and it may be in your graduation packet on Saturday, but I will get them to you soon.  It has been a pleasure having all of you in class this semester.  Congratulations, seniors, and good luck to all of you in the future! :) 

May 23 (Gold) and May 24 (Blue) - Review Day

G3/B2/B4 - Honors English 10 - End of Course Assessment results are in!  Students who passed the ECA are exempt from the Final Exam.  If you did not pass ECA, the Final Exam is mandatory.  Those wishing to take the final exam to help their grades may do so... please let me know by the end of the day on Tuesday if you plan to take the final.  Passed back all graded work -  including the writing assignments we have been keeping in the Benchmark folders.  Journals were DUE today... I graded and returned those in class.  Collected textbooks.  Students had the rest of the block to study for their final exams.  Assignment:  Let me know by the end of the day on Tuesday if you plan to take the Final Exam.

G2/B3 - English 9 - We finished watching O Brother, Where Art Thou? in class today.  Students worked with their partners to complete the comparison chart for the movie and The Odyssey.  Those who are exempting the Final Exam turned in their textbooks and completed the Binder Quiz in class today.  Gave students their Review Sheets for the Final Exam.  Assignment:  Complete the comparison chart, the final review sheet, and prepare your binder.  Final Exam and Binder Quiz in class on Finals Day.

G4 - W131 - Trend Analysis papers DUE.  Five people presented their Final Presentations.  Assignment: Last five Final Presentations will be Wednesday.  Bring scrap paper and a pencil to class with you.

 

May 20, 2011 (Blue)

B2/B4 - SAT Vocab. Test #14.  Worked on MESHY paragraphs for the "Biomedical Research" and PETA articles from last time.  I also gave students a list of the journal topics from this semester.  In B2, we read and discussed "The Plot Against People".  Assignment: Journals are due on Tuesday. 

B3 - Vocabulary Test over List #2 for The Odyssey.  Next, we went through a "pre-viewing" worksheet and discussed 21 different epic themes or elements present in The Odyssey.  Students then viewed the first 40 minutes of O Brother, Where Art Thou? and took notes over the same epic elements that we had just previously discussed.   PARENTS:  This movie is loosely based on The Odyssey by Homer.  Students are expected to take notes as they watch the movie, and they will be tested over the similarities and differences between the movie and the story on their Final Exam.  In addition, the worksheet we began in class today will be collected for a grade next week when we finish the movie.  If you were absent today, you will need to meet with me sometime after school next week to view the first 40 minutes of the movie.   Assignment: Work on the chart and get your Binder ready for the Binder Quiz for next time.

G3- SAT Vocab. Test #14.  Worked on MESHY paragraphs for the "Biomedical Research" and PETA articles from last time.  This pretty much took the rest of the block for this class.  Toward the end of the block, I gave students a list of the journal topics from this semester.  Students worked on their journals for the rest of the block.  Assignment: Journals due on Monday.  We will discuss "The Plot Against People" on Monday as well.

G4 -  Binders DUE at the beginning of the block.  Students peer-edited revisions of their trend papers, then we headed to the computer lab.  Students continued to work on their final drafts and on their final presentations.  At the end of the block, we headed back to my classroom for our first final presentation.   Assignment: Final Drafts of the Trend Analysis paper DUE on Monday.   Presentations will continue on Monday. 

May 18, 2011 (Blue)

B2/B4 - Passed back graded work.  Discussed MESHY paragraph writing.  Partners worked together to use their notes from the comparison/contrast charts for the Apollo 13 activity to write a solid MESHY claim and paragraph.  Several volunteers shared their paragraphs with the class.  Next, we discussed the SOAPSTones for "Use of Animals in Biomedical Research" then we read two short articles posted on PETA's website.  Partners worked together to examine logos (logical), pathos (emotional), and ethos (ethical appeals) for all three articles.  Students began working on MESHY paragraphs by the end of the block.  Assignments: Read "The Plot Against People" (p. 488-492) and do a SOAPSTone.  SAT Vocab. Test #14 next time.

G2 - Passed back and recorded graded work.  Collected some late work and the vocab. worksheets which were due today.  Students completed Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #13-14.  Collected D.O.G. sheets today for participation points.  Next, we finished reading The Odyssey.  Students completed the worksheet as we read "Death in the Great Hall" (p. 1156-1161)and "The Trunk of the Olive Tree" (p. 1162-1165).  We played Vocabulary Bingo for the rest of the block for some extra credit points.  Assignment: Vocab. Test over List #2 next time.

G4 - Returned Trend Rough Drafts.  Students worked in the computer lab for the rest of the block today.  Assignments: Complete a revision of your Trend paper for some peer-editing for Thursday.  Work on your Final Presentation.  Binders are due next time, too.  You have much to do.  Stay focused!  We are almost there!! :)

May 16, 2011 (Blue)

B2/B4 - Homework for "The Race to Save Apollo 13" DUE.  Distributed copies of Vocab. List #14 (the last one for the year).  Students spent the majority of the block completing a comparison/contrast activity using the article and the movie, Apollo 13.  We discussed what we could before the end of the block.  Assignment: Read "Use of Animals in Biomedical Research" (p. 618-624).  Complete a SOAPSTone.  Finish the comparison/contrast chart (if needed).  Start studying Vocab. List #14.  Vocab. Test #14 will be on Friday.

B3 - Finished Vocab. List #2 today.  Students completed Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #11-12.  Timeline Notes.  Next, we read "The Beggar at the Manor" (p. 1148-1149), "The Suitors" (handout), and "The Test of the Bow" (p. 1150-1155).  Students answered the questions on their worksheet as we went through the different parts of the story.  They were collected when we finished.  At the end of the block, students worked on a crossword puzzle and word search for Vocab. List #2.  Assignment: Vocab. Test next time over List #2.

G2 - Finished Vocab. List #2 today.  Students completed Daily Oral Grammar Exercises #11-12.  Next, we read "The Beggar at the Manor" (p. 1148-1149), "The Suitors" (handout), and "The Test of the Bow" (p. 1150-1155).  Students answered the questions on their worksheet as we went through the different parts of the story.  They were collected when we finished.  At the end of the block, students worked on a crossword puzzle and word search for Vocab. List #2.  Assignment: Vocab. Test next time over List #2.

B2/B4 - SAT Vocab. Test #13.  Students read "The Man in the Water" (p. 352-356) and completed a SOAPSTone and questions #6, 8, 10, 11 in class.  Assignment:  Read "The Race to Save Apollo 13" (p. 112-126) and do #1-4 & 7-11.  Do a SOAPSTone on a separate piece of paper.

B3 - Passed back graded work.  Students completed Daily Oral Grammar exercises #9-10.  We read together, then I collected worksheets over "Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis."  Next, I distributed copies of the reading for "The Cattle of the Sun God".  We read and went over that section, and students completed the worksheet as we went.  Next, we read "Father and Son" in the textbook (pages 1142-1147).   Before the end of the block, we started going through Vocabulary List #2.  We got about half way through the list before the bell rang.   Assignment: None.

May 11, 2011 (Gold)

G2 - Collected worksheets over "Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis."  Passed back graded work.  Students completed Daily Oral Grammar exercises #9-10.  Notes: Timeline of Odysseus's journey after the Trojan War.  Next, I distributed copies of the reading for "The Cattle of the Sun God".  We read and went over that section and students completed the worksheet as we went.  Next, we read "Father and Son" in the textbook (pages 1142-1147).   Before the end of the block, we started going through Vocabulary List #2.  We got through the first ten words before the bell rang.  Assignment: None.
