April 30, 2012 (Blue)

B2 - SAT Vocab. Test #11.  Students received SAT Vocab. List #11 after the test.  I passed back and went over the Mythology Research Paper today.  We talked quite a while about what their scores and my comments really mean.  Next, we read a handout for "The Land of the Dead" section of the story.  Students answered questions as we read.  We were then able to start the next section, "The Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis" (p. 1130-bottom of 1133).  Students were only able to complete #1 on the study guide for that section.  Assignment:  SAT Vocab. Flashcards for List #12 due on Friday.

B3/B4 - Crossword Puzzle for List #1 and Synonym/Antonym worksheet DUE.  Vocab. Test for Odyssey List #1.  After the vocab. test, I gave the class the definitions for List #2 (I used an overhead transparency for this... the definitions aren't in the book).  Next, we read "Circe, the Grace of the Witch" (p. 1124-1125) and "The Land of the Dead" (handout).  Students completed the two study guides as we read together today.  Assignment:  IF you want to make flashcards to use to study for the vocab. test, you may do that.  They will not be collected for a grade, but if that helps you, I would encourage you to do this.  No additional assignment.  If you were absent, please make sure you read these two sections and complete the study guides on your own.

April 27, 2012 (Gold)

G1 - Passed back any graded work I had (G1 received research papers back today), then we did 4 Daily Oral Grammar Exercises (#1-4). Next, we ALMOST finished reading "The Cyclops" (p. 1114-1123). Students answered the questions for the study guide as we went through it. Assignment: If you were absent, catch up on the readings you missed. Vocab. test over List #1 on Tuesday. For homework, complete the vocab. crossword puzzle with the synonym/antonym exercise on the back.

G2 - Passed back flashcards and any other graded work I had, then we did 4 Daily Oral Grammar Exercises (#1-4). G3 - Collected Writing Plans from everyone and Comparative Critiques from several students today as well. Distributed copies of a sample outline in MLA format, then we went to the computer lab for the rest of the block. Today was Senior Out-to-Lunch Day, so students came back a little late from lunch. They had the rest of the block to work in the lab. Assignment: Several people have final drafts of the Comparative Critique DUE next time. Everyone needs to complete a full outline for next time as well. You will be drafting this paper out in the middle of next week, so please be ready with your sources gathered. The drafting stage is going to go very quickly, and you cannot afford to get behind at this point in the semester.

April 26, 2012 (Blue)

G1 - I gave the kids a list of vocabulary words, and they copied the definitions from the overhead transparency I showed them in class.  If you were absent, you will receive a copy of the definitions.  Next, we started reading the story.  We were able to read pages 1104-1114.  Students completed study guides as we went.  These were not collected today, but PLEASE complete them as you read the story.  I will be collecting study guides next week with those readings, and I want you to be in a habit of doing them as we go along.  These same questions will still show up on Binder Quizzes, story quizzes, the test, and probably the Final Exam, so skipping this activity will put you at a disadvantage later.  Assignment:  None!  If you were absent, please read the pages we covered in class today and complete the corresponding study guide questions.

 G3 - Collected remaining permission slips and money today, then we went to the Public Library for non-internet materials.  Students were asked to find books, magazines, journals, documentaries, videos, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other references materials related to their Trend topics.  If you were absent, please make-up this time at the Library on your own.  Assignments:  Some of you have final drafts of the Comparative Critique due on Friday.  All of you have Writing Plans due to me on Friday... remember:  at least six sources at this point!  Friday is also Senior Out-to-Lunch day, and we will be in a computer lab working on the outlines for your paper.  Keep working on Research!!!!!!!

April 24, 2012 (Blue)

G1/G2 - Final Drafts of the Research Paper and the Research Paper packet DUE today. Students were taken to the computer lab to work and peer-edit for the entire block today. They needed to print their final drafts WITH THE WORKS CITED PAGE by the end of the block.  G2 received new calendars and SAT Vocab. List #11 today.  Assignment: G2 - SAT Vocab. List #11 flashcards due next time. G1 - No Assignment!

G3 - Permission slips and money collected for the Public Library trip.  Passed back all remaining Comparative Critique rough drafts today.  Students have individualized deadlines on the final drafts of this paper.  Please pay attention to the date you have been given.  Students spent the entire block in the computer lab today working on online research for their papers.  Assignments:  Bring all remaining permission slips and money for the Public Library trip as soon as possible.  Writing Plans are due on Friday, and several of you have final drafts of the Comparative Critique due on Friday as well.  Keep working on research!!!!  Eat FIRST lunch on Wednesday!!! 

April 20, 2012 (Blue)

B2/B3/B4 - Final Drafts of the Research Paper and the Research Paper packet DUE today.  Students were taken to the computer lab to work and peer-edit for the entire block today.  They needed to print their final drafts WITH THE WORKS CITED PAGE by the end of the block.  Assignment:  B2 - SAT Vocab. April 19, 2012 (Gold)

G1/G2 - Rough Drafts of the research paper were due for peer-editing today.  Showed a sample paper and walked through the requirements, including the Works Cited page (see sample worksheet given in class).  G2 was able to get quite a bit of peer-editing done today.  G1, however, is, unfortunately, quite a bit behind.  This is why you have not been seeing grades posted online... they would not be good due to the fact that so many people are moving so slowly and not doing any of the work outside of class.  Because this particular assignment is more about the process than it is about the product, though, I am narrowing the amount of points to the minimum.  You will see a 50 point score for the packet and 100 points for the Final Draft.  I have new calendars and SAT Vocab. ready for G2, and I will give that to you next week.  Assignment:  Final Drafts and packets are due WITH THE WORKS CITED PAGE on Monday by the end of the block whether you are here at school on Monday or not.  If you do not include the Works Cited page in your paper, it will be an automatic F (See rubric given to you in class last time). 

G3 - Collected Comparative Analysis Rough Drafts and checked 10 inquiry questions today.  I handed back several of the rough drafts of the Comparative Critique and should have the rest ready for you on Monday.  A few students turned in permission slips and money for the public library field trip today.   Before lunch, I went through some Bibliography and Note-Taking information. Students received copies of the 2 powerpoints today.  We went to the computer lab after lunch, and students worked on preliminary research for their Trend papers.  I asked them to get on Moodle to find the information they need about the Writing Plan assignment.  If you haven't looked that up yet, please do so as soon as possible.  Assignments:  Some of you have Final Drafts of the Comparative Critique to be working on.  All of you should check Moodle and access the Writing Plan assignment.  That is due next Friday.

April 18, 2012 (Blue)

April 17, 2012 (Gold)

G1/G2 - Checked packets. G2 was asked to have rough drafts or outlines completed for today. G1 was given the option to have them done for extra credit. Students were taken to the computer lab to work on their papers for the entire block today. Students received instructions for typing their papers (handout), and they also received a copy of the rubric I will be using to grade their final drafts. Assignment: Typed drafts due for peer-editing on Thursday.

G3 - Checked Comparative Analysis Draft #3.  Students peer-edited for the first half of the block.  After lunch, I distributed calendars for the Trend unit, permission slips for the library field trip, and went through the powerpoint presentation over the Trend Analysis paper.  Assignment:  Create a list of 10 inquiry questions for your Trend paper.  Revise the Comparative Analysis paper.  It is due for my comments next time.  Bring back the permission slip and $2 ASAP.
