January 31, 2013 (Blue)

B1 - Collected Summary Rough Drafts today for my comments. Students discussed several questions pertaining to our new unit, Marriage & Family.  During this time, several students were able to register for the ACP program.  Next, I gave them new homework calendars and explained the double-entry notebook assignment.  At the end of the block, we read and started to discuss "The Plug-in Drug"  (p. 186).  Assignments:  I need the completed and signed ACP registration forms back TOMORROW.  For Monday, please read "The State of Our Unions" and type a one-page double-entry notebook assignment (p 390+)  We will go through the criteria for the Critique paper and finish discussing "The Plug-in Drug" next time.  There is a template for the double-entry assignment posted on Moodle. 

B3 - Students were given a few minutes to review Chapters 13-15, then they took a quiz over that portion of the book.  Next, we went through the notes and discussed Chapters 12-15.  For the rest of the block, students worked in small groups to write down as much as they could about the 24 tributes in The Hunger Games  and what we know about their districts so far.  Assignment:  Read Chapters 16-18 and be ready for a quiz next time. 

B4 - Students were given a Tip Sheet on properly documenting their sources today.  For the rest of the block, we were in the computer lab.  Students were given the opportunity to have me check anything and everything before I collected their first three bibliography entries and the first 9 notecards at the end of the block today.  Assignment:  Begin working on the second set of bibliography entries and notecards.  Three more sources and 9 more cards will be due by the end of the block on Monday.  Remember... work ahead, not behind!!

January 30, 2013 (Gold)

G1/G2 - Students were given a few minutes to review Chapters 13-15, then they took a quiz over that portion of the book.  Next, we went through the notes and discussed Chapters 13-15.  For the rest of the block, students worked in small groups to write down as much as they could about the 24 tributes in The Hunger Games  and what we know about their districts so far.  Assignment:  Read Chapters 16-18 and be ready for a quiz next time.

G4 - Passed back SAT Vocab. January 29, 2013 (Blue)

B1 - I checked Draft #2 of the Summary assignment, and students peer-edited for the first half hour. Next, we read and discussed three related articles.  While students were discussing the articles, I began calling people up to register for the ACP course through IU.  The deadline for registration is Friday, so we need to make sure we get that taken care of as soon as possible.  For the last half hour, we went to the computer lab so students could work on Draft #3 of the Summary, and I continued to work with students one-on-one to register for the ACP program.  Assignment:  Complete a third draft of your paper for next time.  You will hand that copy in for my comments.  We will also begin the second unit, the Critique, on Thursday.

B3 - Acuity testing in the computer lab today.  If you were absent, you will need to make-up the test with Mr. Long later this week.  Assignment:  Read Chapters 13-15 of The Hunger Games for Thursday.

B1 - Checked Zimbardo summaries.  We spent some time discussing the article and the experiment, then we peer-edited these drafts.  For the rest of the block, we watched a documentary featuring original video footage from this experiment.  Assignment:  Choose one of the three articles and go back to complete a second draft summary for that article.  You may choose to go back and finish the summary you started for the Asch experiment at this point.  We'll spend some time peer-editing again on Tuesday.

G1/G2 - Students were given a few minutes to review Chapters 10-12 prior to taking a short quiz.  After the quiz, I asked them to form small groups to discuss a series of questions related to the book about Reality TV, Video Gaming, and Survival Skills.  After our discussions, we went through the notes for Chapters 10-12.  Assignment:  For Wednesday, please read Chapters 13-15.  You will be taking the second Acuity test of the year on Monday.  Come prepared to go to the computer lab for the entire block that day.  EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES WERE POSTED IN MY ROOM TODAY!  PLEASE COME IN AND CHECK THOSE OUT!

January 23, 2013 (Blue)

B1 - I went around the room to check Milgram Summaries and collected students' goals (as applicable).  We discussed the nature of the summary assignment, the amount of time students spent completing it, and the various approaches students took toward completing the assignment.  Students received a set of Guidelines, then we spent some time peer-editing their papers in class.  Toward the end of the block, we finished the Dateline episode we started last week, then we watched a more recent episode in which Chris Hansen meets with participants who have agreed to take part in a reality TV show in which they administer electric shock to another "participant" (very similar to Milgram's original experiment).  Assignment:  Read Philip Zimbardo's article, "The Stanford Prison Experiment" and complete a typed one-page summary of that article (p. 732+). Revise and/or type your goals (as needed).

B3 - Students worked in small groups to answer questions about Chapters 7-9 for discussion.  While they were doing this, I went around the room and checked Character Chart #2.  We then went through the worksheet and reviewed Chapters 7-9.  Students took notes for a good portion of our time today. With the remainder of the block, I asked students to complete an exit slip.  Assignment:  Read Chapters 10-12 and be ready for another quiz.  This quiz could have anything from Chapters 1-12 on it, so please be prepared!

B4 - Checked Preliminary Topics Worksheet and checked to see whether or not students brought in magazines or newspapers to use with notes today.  For almost the entire block, we began working our way through the Powerpoint lecture on creating Bibliography entries for various sources in MLA format.  Assignment:  SAT Vocab. Test #19 next time.

January 22, 2013 (Gold) 2-Hour Delay

Due to sub-zero temperatures and wind chill this morning, we were on a two-hour delay and followed a shortened schedule.  

G1/G2 - I went around the room and checked the second character chart for points today.  We reviewed Chapters 7-9 and students took notes for the majority of our time today. With the remainder of the block, we discussed the character charts.  Assignment:  Read Chapters 10-12 and be ready for another quiz.  This quiz could have anything from Chapters 1-12 on it, so please be prepared!

January 18, 2013 (Blue)

B1 - Collected Goals and checked summarizing sentences for the Asch article today.  Groups discussed and shared their sentences a little bit, then we walked through the details of the Summary assignment.  Students were given formatting instructions for the Summary, then we went to the computer lab to practice with the article they've been working on up until this point.  At that time, I also handed out copies of some supplementary readings from the second textbook which are associated with the Summary paper.  Assignments:  Read the supplementaries.  Those of you who received goals back from me today should revise and type them.  In addition, all of you should read Stanley Milgram's "The Perils of Obedience" (page 692+) and type up a one-page summary for that article.  The Asch summary we worked on today in class is purely for practice.  At some point, you COULD go back to it if you wanted to, but I will not be checking your practice draft. 

B3 - Students were given about 10 minutes to review prior to taking a quiz over Chapters 1-6.  After the quiz, we formally went through notes for Chapters 4-6.  With the remainder of the block, students watched a video about the ancient Roman Gladiator games, which directly correlates with a number of influences in The Hunger Games.  Assignments:  Complete the second character chart and read Chapters 7-9 for Wednesday.

B4 - Journals, Parent Contact Info, and Letters of Introduction DUE.  Students used their own devices today to work on their preliminary topic research.  Students showed me their Brainstorming worksheets, and we discussed their individual topic choices.  The worksheet I want you to work on with regard to your preliminary research can be found on New Moodle.  Enrollment key: shrimp.  Assignments:  Preliminary Topics Worksheet due on Wednesday.  Bring a newspaper or a magazine to class for a grade.  These will be used for sample bibliography entries only.  They do not have to have anything to do with your topic.  SAT Vocab. Test #19 on Friday of next week.
