April 30, 2013 (Gold)

G1 - This class finished the Greek Theater notes and moved on to a short introduction to Aristotle and his contribution to the Tragic Form.  Students took notes over this material, then we discussed the pages 967-968, including the Cast of Characters.  Students took notes over Antigone's Family Tree.  At the end of the block, we began reading the Prologue of the play (pages 968-971).  If you were absent today, please take the notes and read through the material you missed.  We will finish the Prologue and the rest of today's agenda on Thursday.  Assignment:  NONE!  If you were absent last time, please make sure that you catch up on the notes and complete ECA Practice Test #1.  If you were absent today, please, again, catch up on the notes and the reading.  The English 10 ECA test will be given in this class on Monday and Wednesday of next week.  Parents, PLEASE do not schedule any appointments during this time. Thank you!!

G4 -  This class ALMOST finished the Greek Theater notes today.  For the rest of the block, the class went to the computer lab to complete ECA Practice Test #2 on Moodle.  Assignment:  SAT Vocab. April 29, 2013 (Blue)

B1 - Students were taken to the computer lab for the entire block today to work on their Writing Plans and research for the Research-Based Analysis paper.  Assignment:  Writing Plans are due on Wednesday. 

B3 - Students were taken to the computer lab for most of the block so they could take the first of two Moodle tests for ECA practice. If you were absent, you will need to make arrangements with me to complete this activity (ASAP).  At the end of the block, we returned to my room and briefly read two paragraphs about the play on the right on page 967 and started taking "Family Tree" notes over the Cast of Characters on page 968.  Assignment: None! If you were absent, please make-up the ECA Practice Test with me BY FRIDAY, and read over pages 967-968. 

B4 - Students were taken to the computer lab for most of the block so they could take the second of two Moodle tests for ECA practice. If you were absent, you will need to make arrangements with me to complete this activity (ASAP).  Toward the end of the block, we returned to my classroom and continued the notes over Greek Theater.  We will finish these notes on Wednesday.  Assignment: None!  If you were absent today, please make-up the ECA Practice Test with me BY FRIDAY.

April 26, 2013 (Gold)

G1/G2 - Finished presentations from previously absent students (as applicable).  Students worked a little more on the notes for Greek Theater (which we started in class last time).  For the rest of the block, we went to the computer lab so students could take the first of two Moodle tests for ECA practice.  While we were in the computer lab, I went around and checked the homework from last time (questions from the book).  No Assignment!

April 25, 2013 (Blue)

B1 - I collected the rest of the Comparative Critique final drafts today.  I also collected all of the Comparative Analysis rough drafts.  Next, student discussed their three potential research-based questions with their groups, and I went around to check them and give my input. Students were given the details on the Writing Plan assignment.  This is a "status check" toward the research paper to ensure that students are working on research outside of class toward their papers.  This unit is going to FLY.  Please do everything you can to hit the benchmarks I set for you.  You do not want to try to throw this together at the last minute.  After we discussed the Writing Plan, I walked students through 2 PowerPoint presentations over sample Bibliography (Works Cited/Works Consulted) entries for the paper, gave tips on taking notes, and showed students a variety of examples of ways to cite a paper, depending on the nature of the source.  Assignment:  The Writing Plan is due on Wednesday.  Please put time into the research this weekend.  Go back to the PowerPoint I went through on Tuesday.  It explains the expectations and requirements for the research that is to be used in this paper. 

B3 - At the beginning of the block we touched base about old business (homework due last time, etc.), then I asked students to register for a Moodle course designed to give students additional practice for the ECA.  We will be taking two online tests in the computer lab next week, and students will need to have pre-registered in order to ensure things go smoothly on the testing day(s).  After Moodle registration, we finished the notes over the ancient Greek Theater and then began the notes over Aristotle and his definition of Tragedy and the Tragic Hero.  Assignment:  None!

B4 - Students took SAT Vocab. Test #22 today.  After the test, we went to the computer lab so students could register for a Moodle course designed to give students additional practice for the ECA.  Students took the first of two online tests today.  Assignment:  None!

 

April 24, 2013 (Gold)

G1/G2 - At the beginning of the block we touched base about old business (Wrapping up Research Paper Presentations, Opinionnaires, and finishing ECA Item Sampler #1), then I asked students to read and complete Item Sampler #2 for additional practice for the ECA.  While students took the test, I asked students to register for a Moodle course designed to give students additional practice for the ECA.  We will be taking two online tests in the computer lab sometime in the very near future, and students will need to have pre-registered in order to ensure things go smoothly on the testing day(s).  After going through ECA Item Sampler #2, we began to discuss the ancient Greek Theater to begin our unit on the play Antigone.  We will finish these notes in class next time.  Assignment:  Please read and answer margin questions for the following pages:  p. 958-959 (#1-5), p. 962 (#1-4), p. 964-965, and p. 967. 

G4 - At the beginning of the block, students were given about ten minutes to study SAT Vocab. List #22 before the test.  As they finished, I handed them Opinionnaires.  Groups briefly discussed their answers, then we wrapped up our Research Paper presentations.  Next, I asked students to read and complete Item Sampler #2 for additional practice for the ECA.  While students took the test, I asked students to register for a Moodle course designed to give students additional practice for the ECA.  We will be taking two online tests in the computer lab sometime in the very near future, and students will need to have pre-registered in order to ensure things go smoothly on the testing day(s).   Assignment:  Please read and answer margin questions for the following pages:  p. 958-959 (#1-5), p. 962 (#1-4), p. 964-965, and p. 967. April 23, 2013 (Blue) - William Shakespeare's Birthday :) #nerdalert

B1 - Collected about half of the final Comparative Critique papers today.  Checked Comparative Analysis Draft #2.  Students spent about half of the block peer-editing their drafts, then we began the Research-Based Analysis paper.  I walked students through a PowerPoint which lays out the details of the paper, then groups generated and discussed some potential analysis questions from the Cinderella unit.  Assignment:  Complete Comparative Analysis Draft #3 for my comments for Thursday.  The rest of you have final drafts of the Comparative Critique paper due on Thursday as well.  In addition, I would really like for you to have three potential research-based questions written out and ready to show me. We'll be diving into this last paper pretty quickly, and it will be very important that you choose the right question for your paper in order to hold your interest until the end of the year. 

B3/B4 - We had some research paper presentations in both classes today.  I went around the room and checked the homework from last time (questions from pages 959 & 962).  For the rest of the block, we started discussing a lecture on Ancient Greek Theater.  Students took notes throughout the presentation.  Assignment:  B3- None!  B4 - SAT Vocab. Test #22 next time. 

April 22, 2013 (Gold)

G1/G2 - Students wrapped up their presentations today over their Research Papers.  For the rest of the block, students were asked to complete and discuss an Opinionnaire over some of the concepts we will be discussing in our unit over the ancient Greek play, Antigone.  Assignment: None!

G4 - The last batch of Final Drafts of the Research Paper were due today.  Students almost wrapped up their presentations today over their Research Papers.  We will have one presentation on Wednesday.  Assignment: SAT Vocab. Test #22 next time.

April 19, 2013 (Blue)

Mrs. Northouse was out for a conference all day today.

B1 - Students were expected to have a complete draft of the Comparative Analysis paper and their Works Cited page ready for peer-editing.  Students were given a packet of samples to discuss and read in their groups, the Comparative Analysis Guidelines, and worked on peer-editing for a good chunk of the block.  Assignment:  Please complete Draft #2 for peer-editing for Tuesday.  A few of you have final drafts of the Comparative Critique due to me next time; regardless, all of you should be working on that paper for next week.

B3/B4 - Students were given a practice standardized test, Item Sampler #2.  After going over the answers, they were given an Opinionnaire to discuss in small groups.  After the discussion, students were asked to work on their assignment.  Assignment:  B3/B4 - Please read, take notes, and answer margin questions for the following pages:  p. 958-959 (#1-5), p. 962 (#1-4), and p. 964-965.  In addition, B4 should also study SAT Vocab. List #22.  

April 18, 2013 (Gold)

G1/G2 - Presentations continued today.  Students were, again, asked to give kind feedback and constructive criticism to their peers.  In G2, we were able to complete most of ECA Item Sampler #1.  We will finish this activity in class on Monday.  Assignment:  The rest of the presentations will take place in class on Monday.  Speakers should all be very well prepared at this point. 

G4 - The second batch of Final Drafts of the Research Paper were due today.  Presentations also continued today.  Students were, again, asked to give kind feedback and constructive criticism to their peers.  Assignment:  The third batch of Final Drafts of the Research Paper are due on Monday.  The rest of the presentations will take place in class on Monday.  Speakers should all be very well prepared at this point.  Continue studying SAT Vocab. List #22. 

April 17, 2013 (Blue)

B1 - Half of the class was out today for the psychology field trip.  I checked outlines for the Comparative Analysis and passed back the last of the Comparative Critique rough drafts.  If you were absent, please send me your outline ASAP.  Students went to the computer lab to work on Draft #1 of the paper.  If you were absent today (on a field trip or otherwise), you are still expected to have a completed draft for peer-editing on Friday.  Assignment:  Draft #1 of the Comparative Analysis is due for peer-editing on Friday.   Work on your Comparative Critique final draft.  You have been given individual due dates on that paper.  Please make sure you pay attention to the due date you have been given.

B3 - Several students gave their Research Paper presentations today.  Again, students were asked to give each student constructive criticism and feedback.  Assignment:  Because I will be out for a conference on Friday, the last group of students will give their research paper presentations on Monday. 

B4 - The last group of students gave their Research Paper presentations today.  I handed out copies of SAT Vocab. List #22 today.  Assignment:  You will begin the unit on Antigone in class on Friday.  Start studying SAT Vocab. List #22.
