January 30, 2015 (Blue)

B1 - In class today, we finished reading and discussing the biography for Emily Dickinson. Students then took some notes over her life and poetic style. For the remainder of the block, students were asked to work in small groups to discuss 1-2 of Dickinson's poems and mark the techniques which applied.  We started to discuss "This is My Letter to the World" at the end of the block.  Assignment:  Please choose one of the poems from the Dickinson packet and type up a one-page reflection.  Students were given a rubric in class which outlines the three paragraphs.

B2 - Students were taken to the computer lab for Acuity Test #2 today.  Assignment: You will need 4 bibliography entries (pink sheet) and 12 notecards by the end of the block on Tuesday!

B4 - I checked Double-Entries for "A Shared Sadness." We discussed the article and the various communities in which we are a part.  Next, we charted out the strengths and weaknesses of this article and Sherry Turkle's article from last time.  We briefly discussed the sample paragraphs from last time, and groups were asked to work on a revision before the end of the block.   Assignment: Read "Boy, You Fight Like a Girl" and do a double-entry.  Work on supplementary readings.

January 29, 2015 (Gold)

G1/G4 - Chapters 9-10 Study Guide DUE. Students were taken to the computer lab for Acuity Test #2 today.  Assignment: Read Ch. 11 and do the Study Guide for Ch. 11. Be ready for a quiz over Chapters 9-11 next time.   

G2 - Students were taken to the computer lab for Acuity Test #2 today.  Assignment: You will need 4 bibliography entries (blue sheet) and 12 notecards by the end of the block on Monday! 

January 28, 2015 (Blue)

B1 - Walt Whitman Poetry Analysis one-pagers DUE.  Students were given time in class to look over their vocabulary lists prior to taking Poetry Vocabulary Test #1.  After the vocab. test, we went through the terms for List #2 and then began reading and discussing the life of Emily Dickinson.  Assignment: Read through the short packet of Emily Dickinson's poems.  Highlight, underline, or circle the following:  2 similes, 1 example of personification, 1 oxymoron OR 1 paradox, and find 1 example of onomatopoeia.  

B2 - We did not have a computer lab today, but I was able to get some space in one for a few students.  The remainder of the class was able to use Chrome books or laptops. Collected 4 bibliography entries (blue sheet) and 12 notecards by the end of the block. Assignment: You will have the second Acuity Test of the year on Friday.  Start working on the next set of notecards and bib entries. You will need 4 bibliography entries (pink sheet) and 12 notecards by the end of the block on Tuesday! 

B4 - My substitute checked DEN's for "The Flight From Conversation."  Students discussed the article.  Students listened to two recent pop songs and discussed their meanings in today's technological world.  Students then worked in small groups to read and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of "The Plug-In Drug." Groups then wrote sample analysis paragraphs. We'll go through those together in class next time.  Assignment: Read "A Shared Sadness" and complete a DEN for next time. 

January 27, 2015 (Gold)

G1/G4 - Chapter 8 Learning Logs DUE. Students were given a few minutes to review Chapter 8 while I passed back quite a bit of graded work.  Quiz: Chapter 8.  After the quiz, we discussed ways to effectively introduce and cite quoted material in MLA format, then students revised and improved the symbol paragraphs they wrote last time.  I collected their revisions, then students began reading Chapters 9-10 in class. We decided to use the rest of the block for reading time today.  Assignment: Read Chapters 9-10 and do the Study Guide for next time.  You will have the second Acuity Test of the year on Thursday.  Be ready for a quiz over Chapters 9-11 on Monday.  If you are interested, you can attend the Shakespearean Monologue Competition tonight and type a half-page reflection for 5 points.

G2 - Went to the computer lab for the entire block again today. Collected 3 bibliography entries (gold sheet) and 9 notecards by the end of the block. Assignment: You will have the second Acuity Test of the year on Thursday.  Start working on the next set of notecards and bib entries. You will need 4 bibliography entries (blue sheet) and 12 notecards by the end of the block on Monday! There is an extra credit opportunity posted in my classroom. January 26, 2015 (Blue)

B1 - In class today, we discussed 3-4 of Whitman's poems in the packet, beginning in small groups to share the poetic techniques they found ahead of time.  After much discussion, I began quizzing the class over the poetry vocabulary terms they will be tested over next time.  From what I can tell, students really need to study prior to taking that test on Wednesday.   Assignments: Poetry Vocab. Test #1 is next time. The test will be matching and will cover the first half of the list.  In addition, please type up a one-page reflection on one of Whitman's poems. 

B2 - Went to the computer lab for the entire block again today. Collected 3 bibliography entries (gold sheet) and 9 notecards by the end of the block. Assignment: Start working on the next set. You will need 4 bibliography entries (blue sheet) and 12 notecards by the end of the block next time! There is an extra credit opportunity posted in my classroom. B4 - Summary Draft #3 DUE for Mrs. Northouse’s comments.  During “the collection,” I asked groups to generate some questions from the first unit for potential use on the 5th paper, the Research-Based Analysis, then we transitioned into and began Unit #2, The Critique.  Students received new homework calendars, related cartoons, notes on The Critique, supplementary readings for this unit, a copy of the first article for this unit, and a handout describing the Double-Entry notebook (DEN) assignment. Assignment: Read "The Flight From Conversation" and complete a one-page, typed DEN for this article.  Begin reading the supplementary readings. 

January 23, 2015 (Gold)

G1/G4 - Learning Logs for Chapters 6-7 DUE.  Quiz: Chapters 6-7.  In class today, we returned to the notes we started on Monday over the symbols in the book.  Students took notes throughout the discussion, then I asked students to answer the following prompt:  Choose one symbol and write a well-developed paragraph to show how the author develops that symbol throughout the book using textual support. (Refer to notes or come up with your own support.)  Assignment: Read Chapter 8 and complete the Learning Log for Chapter 8.  If you are behind on the book, please get caught up over the weekend.

G2 - For the entire block, we were in the computer lab.  Students were given the opportunity to have me check anything and everything before I collected their first three bibliography entries and the first 9 notecards at the end of the block today.  Assignment:  Begin working on the second set of bibliography entries and notecards.  Three more sources and 9 more cards will be due by the end of the block on Tuesday.  Remember... work ahead, not behind!

January 22, 2015 (Blue)

B1 - We touched base about last time then transitioned into the poetry portion of our unit on Transcendentalism.  We watched part of a biographical video on Whitman then read a 3-page biography followed by notes.  Assignment: Please read through the packet of poems by Walt Whitman.  Use a highlighter and your poetry terms to find and mark 2 examples of alliteration, 1 analogy, 1 catalog, 3 interesting words, and 1 metaphor.  Be ready to discuss these poems in class on Monday.

B2 - For the entire block, we were in the computer lab.  Students were given the opportunity to have me check anything and everything before I collected their first three bibliography entries and the first 9 notecards at the end of the block today.  Assignment:  Begin working on the second set of bibliography entries and notecards.  Three more sources and 9 more cards will be due by the end of the block on Monday.  Remember... work ahead, not behind!!

B4 - Draft #2 of the Summary DUE for peer-editing. Students peer-edited, then we looked at two of the papers together on the imager to determine how close the drafts might be for my comments.   For the remainder of the block, we watched a recent Dateline episode which looks at related conformity and obedience experiments.  Assignments: Draft #3 of the Summary due to me for my comments on Monday.

January 21, 2015 (Gold)

G1/G4 - Study Guides for Chapter 5 DUE. Quiz: Chapter 5.  After the quiz, students were taken to the computer lab to complete a Write To Learn Argumentative Essay and take a practice College and Career Readiness Assessment.  With the remainder of the block, students were encouraged to work on their assignment.  Assignment: Read Chapters 6-7 and complete a Learning Log for these chapters for next time.

January 20, 2015 (Blue)

Mrs. Northouse was out for a meeting all day.  This is a rough description of the day's events based on the lesson plans I left for the substitute. :)

B1 - Inspirational posters DUE. Students presented posters to the class and turned them in.  Next, students paired or grouped up to create a list of "Top Ten Things to Know about Transcendentalism" and shared those with the class.  Students received a list of Poetry Vocabulary terms and went through the first half of the list together.  Next, students were given a short reading and note-taking assignment. Many turned this in at the end of the block.  Assignments: If you were absent today, please turn in the inspirational poster, a list of "Top Ten Things to Know about Transcendentalism" (use your notes), then read and take notes over pages 498-499 and 506-507.  Use the worksheet provided for your notes.

B2 - Students were taken to the computer lab to complete a Write To Learn Argumentative Essay and take a practice College and Career Readiness Assessment.  With the remainder of the block, students were encouraged to work on the first set of bibliography entries and notecards.  Assignment: 3 Bibliography entries (worksheet #1) and 9 notecards (3 per source) are due by the END of the block on Thursday; HOWEVER, please come prepared to have me spot-check your work at the beginning of the block next time.  I want to help you fix errors before the end of the block.

B4 - Zimbardo Summary Draft #1 DUE for peer-editing and a spot-check. Students peer-edited and discussed the article in their groups.  Assignment: Revise and complete a second draft of one of these 3 summaries (Asch, Milgram, or Zimbardo) for next time.

January 19, 2015 (Gold) Snow Make-Up Day

G1/G4 - Chapter 4 Study Guides DUE. Students were given a few minutes to look over Chapter 4 prior to taking the quiz today.  Quiz: Chapter 4.  After the quiz, we discussed important literary symbols in the book so far. Students took notes.  The class was then divided into groups and assigned a symbol to study more in-depth. Groups took notes over textual support for the symbols they were assigned and began reporting those back to the class before the end of the block.  Assignment: Read Chapter 5 and complete the study guide for Chapter 5. Be ready for a quiz next time.  After the quiz on Wednesday, I will be taking you to the computer lab to complete a Write To Learn writing prompt and to practice the College and Career Readiness Assessment sample provided by the State of Indiana.  

G2 - SAT Vocab. Test #19 today. After the vocab. test, students shared their topic choices with the class, and we narrowed those down so they could officially sign up for topics.  We then picked up where we left off on the Bibliography Entries lecture. For a short amount of time at the end of the block, we moved on to the Notecards lecture. Assignments: Read through and take notes over the most recent Powerpoint lecture. You have Write To Learn testing on Wednesday. For Friday, by the END of the block, you will be expected to turn in three bibliography entries and 3 notecards from each of those sources (9 notecards TOTAL). Go to the Dollar Store and buy a set of notecards. You’ll need them next week!
