February 29, 2016 (Blue) LEAP YEAR DAY!

B2/B3 - Comparative Critique Charts (Draft #1) DUE. I passed back Rough Drafts of the Critique in B2 and half of them in B3 today. I checked charts while groups worked together to create a sample analysis paragraph from their group charts and some research-based analysis questions for the fifth paper (list of questions on Moodle). After sharing and discussing those samples, students worked on Draft #2 for the rest of the block.  Assignment: Complete Draft #2 for next time. This should be a thesis statement and your three well-developed analysis paragraphs. We'll add the rest of the introduction, the conclusion and the Works Cited page later this week.  If you have not been reading the supplementary readings, please work on those. I believe there are some very useful tips for helping you draft this paper. B2 and half of B3 - you have Final Drafts of the Critique paper due on Tuesday, March 8. I will return the rest of them to B3 on Wednesday.

B4 - Test Review Sheets and ALL Late Work DUE.  PARENTS, DESPITE MULTIPLE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND REMINDERS IN CLASS THROUGHOUT THE QUARTER, NO ONE IN THIS CLASS TURNED IN ANY LATE WORK TODAY. I gave students a few minutes to study over their review sheets. Students took the test over To Kill a Mockingbird today, and I collected their novels at the end of the test.  No Assignment!

February 26, 2016 (Gold)

G1 - Double-entries for "The Man Who Couldn't Stop Eating" and Food Journals DUE. I checked these assignments while students discussed their food journals and the article with their groups. We briefly discussed the article and the food journals today.  Groups were asked to complete a sample Comparative Critique chart (one row only) and share it with me. The senior panoramic picture was today, so that was all we had time for in class.  Assignment: Complete your own Comparative Critique chart as Draft 1 of the Comparative Critique (template on Moodle) using the 2 articles from this unit you wish to use for your paper.  Fill that chart with AMPLE support.  This officially counts as Draft #1 of the Comparative Critique paper for your Draft Participation grade, so please put some effort into it. You'll be really glad you did when we start drafting this paper next week.  Work on skimming through those supplementary reading assignments, especially the section on Introductions and Conclusions.

G3/G4 - In class today, students worked on a Test Review sheet and worked on late work. We played BINGO to help them prepare for the test. Assignments: Complete the test review sheet for next time. Your test over To Kill a Mockingbird is Tuesday.  Please bring in your novel and any late or make-up work from this unit.  Late work will not be accepted after the test.

 

February 25, 2016 (Blue)

B2/B3 - Double-entries for "The Man Who Couldn't Stop Eating" and Food Journals DUE. I checked these assignments while students discussed their food journals and the article with their groups. We briefly discussed the article and the food journals today.  In B3, I distributed supplementary readings for this unit and went through the Comparative Critique assignment. Groups worked together to fill in a sample Comparative Critique chart. All remaining time was spent working on individual charts (which I am calling Draft 1). February 24, 2016 (Gold)

G1 - We began the block with several videos to stir up some conversation.  Double-Entry assignments for "Too 'Close to the Bone'..." were DUE today.  We discussed the article and several other related images and videos. I distributed supplementary materials today along with the notes on the Comparative Critique. That was really about all we had time for.  Assignment: Read the last article for this unit, "The Man Who Couldn't Stop Eating," by Atul Gawande, and complete a double-entry notebook assignment.  Upload that to Google Classroom. Start reading the supplementary materials for this unit.  Plan to read those sometime in the next week.  In addition, I need all of you to keep a detailed food journal between now and our next class.

G3/G4 - We finished the movie in class today. At the end of the block, students had about 15-20 minutes to jot down some major differences between the book and the movie and discuss them with others.  We will review for the test in class on Friday. The test over To Kill a Mockingbird will be on Tuesday in these two classes.  Assignment: Please get caught up on any and all late or make-up work from this unit.  ALL late work is due before the test on Tuesday. It will not be accepted after that time.

February 23, 2016 (Blue)

G1 - DENs for "Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance" DUE. We discussed the article and the subject matter therein. For the remainder of the block, students completed a comparison/contrast activity to introduce the main concept of the Comparative Critique paper. At the end of the block, I directed students to Moodle for the Exit Slip.  Assignments: Complete the Candy Activity Exit Slip posted on Moodle as soon as possible.  Read "Too 'Close to the Bone': The Historical Context for Women's Obessession with Slenderness" (p. 167+), and do a DEN.  

G3/G4 -  In class today, we had a few students who needed to make-up their Review Presentations due to their absences. For the remainder of the block, students watched To Kill a Mockingbird. Assignment: Work on late or make-up work. Please pay attention to the calendar posted on Google Classroom. Your test over To Kill a Mockingbird is coming up, and late work from this unit will not be accepted after the test.

Students turned in the Rough Draft of the Critique paper and their DEN's for "Rethinking Weight."  I distributed a copy of the BMI chart.  We discussed the BMI chart and the article for quite a while.  Assignment: Read "Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance" (p. 163+), by Mary Ray Worley, and do a double-entry notebook assignment.  Please try to break your notes down by TOPIC. The more relevant support you have for each Topic about weight, the easier it will be for you to write your paper at the end of the unit.

G3/G4 - Students gave their Review Presentations in class today.  After presentations, we discussed some things we liked and things that could be improved upon.   Assignment: If you have any late or absent work to get turned in, please do so as soon as possible. You will be tested over the book and the movie next week, and I will not accept late work after the test.

February 16, 2016 (Gold)

G1 - Critique Draft #3 due for peer-editing. Before peer-editing, I asked students to generate some questions for the previous two units for potential use for the Research-Based Analysis paper (spreadsheet hidden on Moodle).  Students peer-edited, then we began the Comparative Critique unit with some discussion questions.  Assignments: Critique Draft #4 (the official Rough Draft) due next time for my comments.  Upload it to Google Classroom and print one copy for me if you can. I will give you extra points if you do. If you haven’t printed your article for this paper yet, be sure to print a copy for your binder.  Use the page numbers in your citations. In addition, please read "Rethinking Weight" (p. 154+) and do a double-entry notebook assignment. Upload it to Google Classroom. I suggest that you focus your note-taking on the topics or subjects that come up in the article and record the author’s thoughts on those particular subjects or topics. It will help you construct your Comparative Critique later in the unit.

G3/G4 - Study Guides for Ch. 29-31 DUE.  Students were given the entire block today to work on a Google Slides review activity with partners.  Students were asked to complete this activity in class, and they will present them in class next time. Assignment: Presentations will be given next time.  Don't be absent and leave your partner out to dry!  If you were absent, I have assigned a short chapter for you to complete and present on your own. If you have any late or absent work to turn in, please use the extra time between now and Thursday to get that completed and turned in. You will be tested over the book soon, and I will not accept late work after the test.
