November 11, 2016 (Gold) Veterans Day

G1 - We had six Book Talks today. I then collected the Act II: Scenes 4-6 Review Sheets and distributed the test review sheets.  We finished watching the movie (Acts I-II only). That was all we had time for due to the shortened block. Assignment: Complete the Test Review Sheet, and study for the test over Acts I-II for next time.

G2 - Draft #2 of the Comparative Analysis DUE for peer-editing. Students added some Research-Based Analysis questions pertaining to the “Cinderella” unit to the document posted on Moodle. I checked drafts and uploaded the next calendar today. Students spent about three 10-minute rounds on peer-editing. For the rest of the block, I walked them through the Research-Based Analysis paper (Google Slides presentation on Moodle).  Assignment: Draft #3 of the Comparative Analysis is due for peer-editing next time. Upload to Google Classroom. Be sure to include your Works Cited page and finish your paper if you haven't done so.  In addition, please be sure you have read through the Google Slides presentation about the Research-Based Analysis paper which is posted on Moodle.  Write three potential questions for your Research-Based Analysis paper in a Google Doc and submit those questions to me on Google Classroom. I will help you choose your topic. The more specific and varied your questions, the better your choices will be.  I prefer to avoid any overlap on topics in this class.

 

G3 - I gave students a Mastery Test over Run-ons and Fragments. For the rest of the block, we watched some political campaign videos and analyzed them in class together. Students turned their notes in before the end of the block for participation points.  No Assignment! We will begin a Political Ad Campaign Project in class next time. 

November 10, 2016 (Blue)

B1 - We had four Book Talks today. I then collected the Act II: Scenes 4-6 Review Sheets.  We finished watching the movie (Acts I-II only), and students had time to work on their Test Review Sheets and study for the rest of the block today.  Assignment: Complete the Test Review Sheet, and study for the test over Acts I-II for next time.

B3/B4 - Students were asked to write a half-page journal today on their thoughts on the election results. I then gave them a Mastery Test over Run-ons and Fragments. For the rest of the block, we watched some political campaign videos and analyzed them in class together. Students turned their notes in before the end of the block for participation points.  No Assignment! We will begin a Political Ad Campaign Project in class next time. 

November 9, 2016 (Gold)

G1 - Review Sheets for Act II: Scenes 1-3 DUE. In lieu of reading time today, students were given an opportunity to write about the election results and their thoughts on the outcome. We had four Book Talks today. From there, we finished reading Act II together, and many students turned in the review sheet for Act II: Scenes 4-6. We were able to start watching the movie (watched a good chunk of Act I) before the end of the block.  Assignment: If you did not finish or turn in the Act II: Scenes 4-6 review sheet, please do so for Friday. I did not distribute the test review sheet today, and I will give those to you on Friday.

G2 - Draft #1 of the Comparative Analysis DUE. I checked drafts, but they were not ready for peer-editing today. Students were given most of the block to share their ideas and consult their resources. Many students needed to talk through and process the election results today.  Assignment: Draft #2 of the Comparative Analysis is due for peer-editing next time. Upload to Google Classroom. Be sure to include your Works Cited page and finish your paper. 

G3 - Worksheets for "I Acknowledge Mine" DUE. We started with a Grammar Exercise (Handout - not electronically available) for review of Sentence Fragments, Run-ons and Complete Sentences. We went through that together. Next, I asked students to write about the election. They were directed to write about the issues which are most important to them.  We then watched three political ad campaign videos and analyzed them for Claims, Support, and Counterarguments, much like what we have been doing in class with the Argumentative pieces we have been reading.   I collected students' notes over these videos at the end of the block.  Assignment: None! 

November 8, 2016 (Blue) Election Day

B1 - We had three book talks today, then students had a few minutes of reading time. We finished Act II together (Scenes 5-6) and most students turned in the review sheet over Act II: Scenes 4-6 in class.  For the rest of the block, we started watching the movie version of Acts I-II.  Assignments: Finish the review sheet for Act II: Scenes 4-6 (if needed) and start working on the test review sheet. We will finish the movie for Acts I-II in class on Thursday.

B3/B4 - Worksheets for "I Acknowledge Mine" DUE. We started with a Grammar Exercise (Handout - not electronically available) for review of Sentence Fragments, Run-ons and Complete Sentences. We went through that together. Next, I asked students to write about today's election. They were directed to write about the issues they find important, rather than simply picking a particular candidate to write about. After sharing a few of these responses, we then watched several political ad campaign videos (B3: 2 videos and B4: 3 videos) and analyzed them for Claims, Support, and Counterarguments, much like what we have been doing in class with the Argumentative pieces we have been reading.  In B4, I collected these "notes" at the end of the block.  Assignment: None! 

November 7, 2016 (Gold)

G1 - Review Sheets for Act I: Scenes 3-5 DUE. Words to Know Translation Exercise #2 and Crossword Puzzle worksheets DUE.  We had one Book Talk, then students had some reading time.At that point, I handed out Even More Elizabethan Words to Know and went over the vocabulary (posted on Moodle, if needed). We then jumped back into the play and read Act II: Scenes 2-3. For the rest of the block, we read Act II: Scene 4.  Assignment: Finish the Act II: Scenes 1-3 review sheet (unless you turned it in during class today). In addition, please finish Act II: Scenes 5-6 and do the review sheet for Wednesday. We will go through this in class together on Wednesday, but I'd like for you to try to read this on your own first.  Materials are posted on Moodle if you need them.

G2 - Comparative Analysis Outlines DUE.  We finished the movie and reviewed several scenes. Students bounced ideas around with their groups while I checked their outlines, specifically their questions.  Students worked on their outlines and drafts for the rest of the block today.   Assignment: Draft #1 is DUE next time. For now, focus on solidifying your question, thesis, and your three analysis paragraphs.  

G3 - Worksheets for "On Nuclear Disarmament" DUE. Students completed Grammar Exercise A #1-10 on page 124 (Handouts available if you were absent). Next, students completed a half-page journal on "Animal Rights." For the remainder of the block, we talked about Jane Goodall and read "I Acknowledge Mine."  Assignment: Complete the worksheet for "I Acknowledge Mine." Materials are posted on Moodle, if you need them. 

November 4, 2016 (Blue) Student Recognition Program Today

We were on a shortened schedule today for the Pep Session and Student Recognition Program.

B1 - Review Sheets for Act I: Scenes 3-5 DUE. Words to Know Translation Exercise #2 and Crossword Puzzle worksheets DUE.  We had one Book Talk, then students had some reading time.At that point, I handed out Even More Elizabethan Words to Know and went over the vocabulary (posted on Moodle, if needed). We then jumped back into the play and read Act II: Scenes 2-3. For the rest of the block, we read Act II: Scene 4.  Assignment: Finish the Act II: Scenes 1-3 review sheet (unless you turned it in during class today). In addition, please finish Act II: Scenes 5-6 and do the review sheet for Tuesday. We will go through this in class together on Tuesday, but I'd like for you to try to read this on your own first.  Materials are posted on Moodle if you need them.

November 3, 2016 (Gold)

G1 - After three book talks, we read and discussed Act I: Scene 5. I then shared some interesting statistics about kissing (Romeo and Juliet met and kissed in today's reading), then students journaled their responses. After some discussion, we then read and discussed Act II: Prologue, Scene 1, and half of Scene 2.  Assignments:  If you did not finish the Act I: Scenes 3-5 worksheet in class today, finish that. In addition, please complete Elizabethan Words To Know Translation Exercise #2 and the Crossword Puzzle (Handout).  Finish reading Act II: Scenes 1-3 and try to complete the Review Sheet for next time.  We’ll finish Act II: Scenes 2-3 in class next time.  Materials are posted on Moodle, with the only exception being the Translation exercise and Crossword Puzzle. I do not have electronic copies of those handouts.

G2 - Comparative Critique Final Drafts were due today. We almost finished the movie today, but we will have to finish it and review some key scenes in class next time. At the end of the block, I explained the outline assignment for Monday.  Assignment: For next time, you will be completing an outline. A template has been posted on Moodle.  Please fill in as many of the highlighted parts of the outline as possible. If you do more, it will be helpful toward draft work for next week, but it is not critical just yet.  In class next time, we will be discussing the inquiry questions you have written and where you hope to take your paper.  You will have some time to work on your drafts in class next time as well.  Do not walk in "empty-handed" next time; be sure to upload at least a partial outline to Google Classroom.  This will count as an actual draft toward your draft work participation score.  We will finish the movie in class next time, but you will still have plenty of time to restructure your paper prior to drafting, if needed.

G3 -  We started with a short grammar activity on Run-ons (p. 120-121 of Grammar books - handouts available if needed). Students completed the even questions only for Exercise A on page 121 as their Check for Understanding. Next, we discussed the journal topic: Pick a topic of great importance in the world today. 1. How can we better prepare for that issue, or 2., how can we make the world a safer place regarding that issue?  A few students shared their journal responses.  For the remainder of the block, we discussed the world’s Nuclear capabilities with a short video clip and read "On Nuclear Disarmament," by Carl Sagan (p. 594+). Students had a few minutes to work on their assignment in class today.  Assignment: Complete the worksheet for “On Nuclear Disarmament.”  The speech and the worksheet are available on Moodle, if needed.

 

November 2, 2016 (Blue)

November 1, 2016 (Gold)

G1 - Act I: Scene 2 Review Sheet DUE.  After some reading time, students studied a painting from 1470 (on Moodle) and answered several questions about the piece in their journals (Full prompt on Moodle).  They also completed Elizabethan Words to Know Translation Exercise #1 for practice. We went over it together.  I quickly reviewed the play so far, then we read and discussed Act I: Scenes 3 and 4 (all that time allowed) in class today.  If you were absent, please don't forget that the audio version of the play is available on Moodle along with the textbook pages you will need to read.  Assignment:  Finish reading Act I: Scenes 3-4 (if needed) and do the Act I: Scenes 3-4 Review Sheet. If you lost the worksheet I gave you, it is also posted on Moodle.  We will cover Scene 5 together in class on Thursday.

G2 - In class today, we discussed the satirical article, "Freshman Term Paper Discovers Something Totally New About Silas Marner." We then discussed the concept of finding a "golden nugget" to write about for the Comparative Analysis paper (Paper #4).   I then shared an article on a common plagiarism issue, then students began watching the movie for their Comparative Analysis papers. Students were expected to take detailed notes throughout the film.  We will finish the movie in class next time.  Assignment: Comparative Critique Final Drafts are due on Thursday. Please be sure to print 2 copies for extra points toward participation and bring back the comment slip with the Number Codes sheet attached. If you have not finished the supplementary packet for this unit, this is a good time to do that. Begin formulating your ideas for this paper. Re-organize your notes, if needed.  

G3 - Worksheets for "Doing Nothing is Something" DUE.  Journal: How attached are you to the penny?  Do you keep them? Roll them? Write a half-page emotional response for or against the penny.  I shared an article about a restaurant that was caught “rounding” bills without customers knowing. We discussed the idea of abolishing the penny throughout the block today.  We read "Abolishing the Penny Makes Good Sense" (p.  586+). Students had time to work in class on the worksheet over the Claim, Support, and Counter-arguments made throughout the essay.  Assignment: If you didn't turn in your worksheet over the article today, please do so for next time.
