September 29, 2017 (Gold)

G2/G4 - "The Cask of Amontillado" Homework Questions & Vocabulary Worksheet DUE.  "Grey Matter" Digital Assignment DUE on Google Classroom. In class today, we read three excerpts from The House on Mango Street to use as inspiration for a Narrative Essay. Students were asked to handwrite a rough draft in their journals about a Meaningful Childhood Memory. It should be at least 300 words long (roughly two pages handwritten) and must include a strong sense of organization with an introduction, middle, and end. Assignment: Rough Drafts of the Personal Narrative are due at the beginning of class on Tuesday. There is a document posted on Moodle called "Narrative Essay Assignment" which will provide more direction for students are struggling to find an idea or do not know where to start.

G3 - Homework Questions for "The Interlopers" AND "Searching for Summer" DUE. Students shared their AOW reflections on the "Sugar" article. We created a class Journal list (posted on Google Classroom), and students chose one AOW reflection to type up for peer-review on Tuesday.  Assignment: Work on your journal (if needed). Type one of your 250-word AOW reflections and submit it prior to class on Tuesday. Those will be peer-edited in class on Tuesday.  A current and updated homework calendar for the rest of the first quarter is posted on Google Classroom for you under the "About" tab. This calendar is good to go until Fall Break.

B1 - Homework Questions for "Searching for Summer" DUE. Students shared their AOW reflections on the "Sugar" article. We created a class Journal list (posted on Google Classroom), and students chose one AOW reflection to type up for peer-review on Monday.  Assignment: Work on your journal (if needed). Type one of your 250-word AOW reflections and submit it prior to class on Monday. Those will be peer-edited in class Monday morning.  A current and updated homework calendar for the rest of the first quarter is posted on Google Classroom for you under the "About" tab. This calendar is good to go until Fall Break.

B2 - In class today, we spent the first half of the block analyzing and evaluating candies by practicing several of the analytical tools and techniques from Writing Analytically.  Students completed an Exit Slip for the candy activity on Moodle. For the rest of the block, students peer-edited the two analysis paragraphs they were asked to submit for today.  That was about all we had time for. Assignment: For Monday, have three well-written analysis paragraphs ready for peer-editing. Please try to submit those a little early, if possible. I will be checking them from a conference room at IU.

September 26, 2017 (Blue)

B1 - Homework for "The Interlopers" DUE. Students requested time to discuss the previous Article of the Week (DACA) and journal responses, so we spent a few minutes sharing those before moving into the next Article of the Week (what we’ll call the “Sugar” article). I gave students a little over 15 minutes to read/annotate/respond to that article. Students then wrote a half-page journal response today to the following question: “What do you take for granted?  Explain.”  After sharing several and discussing them, we started reading "Searching for Summer" together.   Assignment: Finish the story (if needed - on Moodle) and answer questions #6, 8, 9, 10, and 11 on page 71 at the end of the story. Be sure to write at least two complete sentences to answer each question.

B2 - Comparative Critique Charts were DUE. While I checked and commented on charts, groups were asked to write some research-based analysis questions for the fifth paper (list of questions on Moodle). Groups fixed their “group” charts and then began constructing a sample group analysis paragraph for practice.  We went through those (as time allowed), and students were given the rest of the block to fix their charts (as needed) and begin working on their assignment.  Assignment: Fix your charts (as needed) and resubmit them with Draft #1 on Google Classroom. For Draft #1, write two well-developed analysis paragraphs for now. We'll add the rest of the paper later this week.  If you have not been reading the supplementary readings, please work on those. I believe there are some very useful tips for helping you draft this paper. Please remember that Documentary Double-Entries and Binders are due next week.

B3 - Homework Questions and Vocabulary DUE for "The Cask of Amontillado." Students wrote a half-page journal on the following topic: "What's grosser than gross?" After sharing a few of these, students were given instructions for their assignment. They had almost 45 minutes to complete the assignment in class today.  Assignment: Read "Grey Matter" and complete the assignment posted on Google Classroom. Submit your assignment when you are finished.

September 25, 2017 (Gold)

G2 - Vocabulary Test: “The Scarlet Ibis.” After some study time, students took the vocabulary test.  After the test, they worked on the vocabulary assignment for “The Cask of Amontillado” and turned that in.  For the rest of the block, we read “The Cask of Amontillado” together as a class. We were not able to finish the story before the bell rang.   Assignment:  Please finish reading the story and complete questions #1, 5, 6, 8, 9  at the end.  Be sure to use at least two complete sentences to answer each question.  I have posted links to the story and homework questions on Moodle.

G3 - Final Drafts of the Character Analysis Essay were DUE today. I gave students time to go back to their article of the week (DACA) and their 250-word reflections. We then moved into a simple journal prompt about holding grudges.  At this point, after sharing a few journal responses, students worked for the rest of the block independently on notes over Irony, Parody, and Satire (copy from Moodle). They were also asked to read "The Interlopers" and work on those homework questions for Friday (on Moodle).  In addition, we discussed the expectations for "Flex Day," which is the E-Learning Day we have on Wednesday. Assignments: Copy the notes over "Irony, Parody, and Satire" from Moodle. Read "The Interlopers," and answer questions #4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 11 at the end of the story (p. 403, posted on Moodle).  On Wednesday, follow the instructions you are given on Google Classroom. All of these assignments are due on Friday, unless you notify me about special circumstances or ask for an extension.

B1-  Final Drafts of the Character Analysis Essay were DUE today. I gave students time to go back to their article of the week (DACA) and their 250-word reflections. We then moved into a simple journal prompt about holding grudges.  At this point, students worked for the rest of the block independently on notes over Irony, Parody, and Satire (copy from Moodle). B2 - Final Drafts of the Summary DUE. Double-entries for "The Man Who Couldn't Stop Eating" DUE. I distributed several handouts and supplementary pieces for this unit. I collected Final Drafts and checked Double-Entries while groups worked together to put together topic lists for the four articles in our weight unit. On the chalkboard, we attempted to map out some of the topics addressed in each article which might be used for comparisons. Groups then began to work on a shared sample chart together. All remaining time was spent working on these group charts (one row only for sample purposes).  We will be using this group chart to draft one sample analysis paragraph next week, so please be sure your group chart is completed ASAP.  Assignment: Complete your OWN Comparative Critique chart for the Comparative Critique (template on Moodle) using the 2 articles from this unit you wish to use for your paper.  Fill that chart with AMPLE support from each article for all three rows.  This officially counts as a draft of the Comparative Critique paper for your participation grade, so please put some effort into it. You'll be really glad you did when we start drafting this paper later next week.  Work on skimming through those supplementary reading assignments, especially the section on Introductions and Conclusions.

G2/G4 - Edgar Allan Poe Video Worksheets DUE. G4 Only: Quiz: Edgar Allan Poe. Students wrote a half-page journal today about "Revenge." We then moved into some discussion over an Opinionnaire for quite awhile. From there, we read and discussed "Annabel Lee," by Edgar Allan Poe. Assignment:  Study the vocabulary words and definitions for "The Scarlet Ibis" for the Vocabulary Test on Monday.

B1 - Character Analysis Essay Draft #2 DUE.  Students were given the Article of the Week to read and begin writing their annotations while I checked the drafts that were due today.  After spot-checking drafts for common issues, we went over a few things in class to help them improve their papers.  We built a Works Cited page together (posted on Moodle) for students to use as the template for their own papers. Assignment: Final Draft of the Character Analysis Essay DUE on Friday. Put the Article of the Week on hold for now. Let's get those final papers polished up and ready to go.  Use the rubric and Works Cited pages posted on Moodle. Use the supporting evidence and be sure to cite it properly in MLA format. If you were absent and have questions about this, please let me know.

B2 - Students were in a Senior Meeting for the beginning part of the block. When they came to class, they spent nearly an hour getting registered for the college credits through IU. When we were able to move on, we watched and discussed 2 music videos and we started watching another, related video at the end of the block.  That was all we had time for today.  Assignments: Final Drafts of the Summary are due on Friday. Please bring back the Rough Draft with my comments attached as well as the Number Codes Sheet on the back. If you can print two copies, please do so for bonus points. In addition, please read and complete the DEN for "The Man Who Couldn't Stop Eating."

In class today, we started to go through notes on Setting, Mood, and Imagery (posted on Moodle).  Students were taken out of class for the rest of the block for a convocation.  Assignment: Please finish taking the notes from the document posted on Moodle. Complete the video and video worksheet for next time.  Start studying for the vocabulary test over the words and definitions for “The Scarlet Ibis.” That vocabulary test will be given on Monday.

B1 - Character Analysis Essay Rough Drafts DUE. As warned, students who did not have three complete pages ready for peer-editing today were sent to ISD to finish their drafts. Students peer-edited in class today, and we discussed formatting requirements. Assignment: For Wednesday, please revise your paper. Submit it on Google Classroom again. This will be Draft #2, and we will spend some time peer-editing as well as working on the MLA citations for the pieces you are using in your paper. We will also discuss the Works Cited page at that time.  Be sure you are using the rubric (posted on Moodle) to help you maximize the point value of your paper.

B2 - DENs for "Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance" DUE. Critique Rough Drafts were also DUE today.  I passed back Rough Drafts of the Summary in class today.  While I worked through checking and collecting the assignments which were due today, students watched some trailers (document on Moodle) for related movies and documentaries to give them some ideas for the Documentary DEN which will be due at the end of the 9 weeks. We discussed three related video clips for the rest of the block today. That was all we had time for.  Assignments: Read "Too 'Close to the Bone': The Historical Context for Women's Obsession with Slenderness" (p. 167+), and do a DEN. Final Drafts of the Summary are due on Friday.
