March 16, 2018 (Blue)

B1/B2 - Students took the Common Quarterly Assessment for Honors English 10 today. After the test, we almost wrapped up our Powerful People Presentations in Blue 1. We will pick up right where we left off when we return from Spring Break. Assignment: If you have not finished the book or need to review it, please take time to do that. When we return, I will return your rough drafts of the Research Paper, and we will work on revisions. We will also begin test review for the 1984 test, which will include a matching section on these powerful people. Please start studying the names of these men and women and their positions of power. Flashcards might be a great idea.

B3 - All late or absent work was due to me at the beginning of the block. Students had a few minutes to look at their study guides prior to taking the Common Quarterly Assessment (Midterm Exam) for English 9. All tests and make-up work has been graded, and scores have been posted and current on PowerSchool. HAVE AN EXCELLENT SPRING BREAK!  

March 15, 2018 (Gold)

G1 - All late or absent work was due to me at the beginning of the block. Students had a few minutes after announcements to look at their study guides prior to taking the Common Quarterly Assessment (Midterm Exam) for English 9. Tests and make-up work are all graded, and scores are posted and current on PowerSchool. HAVE AN EXCELLENT SPRING BREAK! 

G3 - Comparative Critique Draft #4 (Official Rough Draft) DUE. Documentary DEN's DUE. Binders DUE. I collected and checked assignments and binders for almost the entire block. Students watched a TV episode related to our unit on weight.  Assignments: Please read "Universality of a Folktale" (p. 267+) and be ready for discussion. We will begin our fourth unit at that time.  If you would like to complete a double-entry over the article, you may submit that for an "extra" check toward participation. PLEASE HAVE A GREAT SPRING BREAK!

G4 - Movie Comparison Worksheets were due today. All late or absent work was also due. Students had a few minutes to look at their study guides prior to taking the Common Quarterly Assessment (Midterm Exam) for English 9. Tests and make-up work are all graded in this class, and scores are posted and current on PowerSchool. HAVE AN EXCELLENT SPRING BREAK! 

March 14, 2018 (Blue)

B1/B2 - Journal: What would they put in Room 101 for you? We discussed Book III: Chapters 3-6, then we chose quotations from this passage of the book and made collages. Sometimes, you just need a little art project in your life.  Assignment: If you have not finished the novel, please do that. For the Common Quarterly Assessment, re-familiarize yourself with basic literary terms (ex. Symbolism, Types of Irony, Point of View, Figurative Language, etc.).

B3 - In class today, students had time to study vocabulary prior to taking the vocabulary test over List #2. Students worked on their review sheets for the Common Quarterly Assessment (Midterm) for the rest of the block. Assignment: Please study for the Common Quarterly Assessment. If you have any late work, it is due to me at the beginning of the block on Friday.

March 13, 2018 (Gold)

G1 - In class today, students had time to study vocabulary prior to taking the vocabulary test over List #2. We then finished reading "Death in the Great Hall" and "The Trunk of the Olive Tree." Students worked on their review sheets, then we played Vocabulary Bingo for the rest of the block. Assignment: The Reading Guide for today's readings are due next time. You have a vocabulary test over List #2 next time, so please study.

G3 - Final Drafts of the Critique were DUE today. Comparative Critique Draft #3 (full draft) DUE for peer-editing. Students peer-edited and worked on revisions to their drafts for the rest of the block.  Assignments: 1. The official Rough Draft of the Comparative Critique is due to me on Thursday. Documentary DENs and Binders are due on Thursday as well.  There is no midterm exam in W131.

G4 - Students were given a few minutes to study prior to taking Vocabulary Test for List #2.  After the vocabulary test, we finished watching the movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?. At the end of the block, students received a review sheet for the Common Quarterly Assessment.  Assignments:  Please study for the Common Quarterly Assessment. If you have any late work, it is due to me at the beginning of the block on Thursday. Movie Comparison worksheets are due to me on Thursday as well.

March 12, 2018 (Blue)

B1/B2 - Journal: Who or what are you willing to die for?  Group Discussion: Book III: Chapters 1-2. After some discussion, several people presented their Powerful People information.  The rest of the block was given to students as reading time.  Assignment: Read Book III: Chapters 3-6.

B3 - Reading Guides for "Cattle of the Sun God" and "Father and Son" DUE (2-sided worksheet). In class today, we finished reading "The Test of the Bow" and went on to finish "Death in the Great Hall" and "The Trunk of the Olive Tree." Students worked on their review sheets, then we played Vocabulary Bingo for the rest of the block. Assignment: The Reading Guide for today's readings are due next time. You have a vocabulary test over List #2 next time, so please study.

March 9, 2018 (Gold)

G1 - Reading Guides for "Cattle of the Sun God" and "Father and Son" DUE (2-sided worksheet). In class today, I passed back quite a bit of graded work, then we read and discussed "The Beggar at the Manor," "The Suitors" (handout), and "The Test of the Bow." Students worked on their review sheets for the rest of the block. Assignment: The Reading Guide for today's readings are due next time. You have a vocabulary test over List #2 next time, so please study vocabulary over the weekend.

G3 - Comparative Critique Draft #2 DUE (about 2 pages). Students worked in their groups to peer-edit their papers, and the rest of the block was given to them as work time. Assignments: Full rough draft of the Comparative Critique due next time for peer-editing. The Final Draft of the Critique is also due next time, so please bring two printed copies and your rough draft back with my comments. Binders and Documentary DEN's are due next week, and if you are leaving early for Spring Break, I'd like to have those on Tuesday.  

G4 - I collected late work, then we walked through the first half of a Comparison Chart together before starting to watch O Brother, Where Art Thou? We will finish the movie in class on Tuesday. Assignment: Study Vocabulary List #2 for the vocab. test for next time.

March 8, 2018 (Blue)

B1/B2 - In class today, students were asked to pick a major theme which is discussed in "The Book" in Chapter 9 to write about and explore further in their journals. From there, students met in groups to discuss what they had chosen and share ideas. Students then took a quiz over Book II. After the quiz, groups met to discuss the Article of the Week ("Global Water Crisis") while I checked their 250-word responses. After discussing the article for a bit, students presented their information about their "Most Powerful People." The rest of the block was dedicated time for reading. Assignment: Read Book III: Chapters 1-2 for Monday.

B3 - Vocabulary Assignments for List #2 were DUE today. In class, we read "Father and Son," “The Beggar at the Manor," "The Suitors" (Handout), and about half of "The Test of the Bow." Reading Guides were DUE today for "The Cattle of the Sun God" (Handout) and "Father and Son" (p. 1142-1147).  If you were absent, you will need to read these sections on your own. We will finish the story in class on Monday.  Assignments: Please finish the reading guides that go with the parts of the story we read in class today. Study vocabulary List #2. You will have a vocabulary test over that material next week.  

March 7, 2018 (Gold)

G1 - Vocabulary Assignment for List #2 DUE. Reading Guides for "Land of the Dead" and "Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis" DUE. I gave students a little bit of time to work on late work, then we started reading "Cattle of the Sun God" (handout) and "Father and Son" (in the book/on Moodle). Students completed the reading guides for both of these readings. Then we went through a Timeline, and students took notes over each stop on Odysseus's journey since the story began. Assignment: Study Vocabulary List #2.

G3 - I checked the analysis paragraphs students were asked to complete for today as Draft #1 of the Comparative Critique. Students peer-edited those analysis paragraphs in three rounds of 5-minutes each. For the rest of the block, I asked them to work on the assignments they have between now and Spring Break. Assignment: For Friday, have a thesis and the entire analysis section of your paper ready for peer-editing (about 2-3 pages). We will add the rest of the paper over the weekend. Critique Final Drafts are due on Tuesday. Documentary DENs and Binders are due next week. There is much to do, but we have some time. Stay focused on one task at a time.

G4 - Reading Guides were DUE today for "The Cattle of the Sun God" (Handout) and "Father and Son" (p. 1142-1147). Vocabulary Assignments for List #2 were also DUE today. In class, we finished The Odyssey today.  We read “The Beggar at the Manor," "The Suitors" (Handout), "The Test of the Bow," "Death in the Great Hall," and "The Trunk of the Olive Tree".  If you were absent, you will need to read these sections on your own. There are two reading guides to cover all of these parts of the story. The rest of the story moves very quickly, so it should be easy for you to complete over the weekend. Assignments: Please finish the two reading guides that go with the parts of the story we read in class today. Study vocabulary List #2. You will have a vocabulary test over that material next week.  

March 6, 2018 (Blue)

B1/B2 – Students were given about 20 minutes to read, annotate, and work on their Article of the Week 250-word reflections (“Global Water Crisis”). From there, students worked through a series of questions about Book II: Chapters 6-8, then we discussed them as a class Five people presented information about their powerful people. Students read quietly for the rest of the block. Assignment: Read Book II: Chapters 9-10. Be ready for a quiz over Book II next time. Complete your Article of the Week reflections for next time.

B3 - In class today, we went through the vocabulary words and definitions for List #2, then we read and discussed "Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis" and "The Cattle of the Sun God." Students worked on their reading guides as we went along. Those are due next time. Assignments: Complete the vocabulary assignment for List #2 and the reading guides from today's two readings (if needed).

March 5, 2018 (Gold)

G1 - In class today, we reviewed the story up to this point, then we read and discussed "The Land of the Dead" and "Sirens; Scylla and Charybdis." Students completed the reading guides as we went through the readings. We then went through the words and definitions for Vocabulary List #2.  Assignment: If you did not complete the reading guides from today's readings, please do so for next time. In addition, please complete the vocabulary assignment for List #2.

G3 - Comparative Critique Charts were DUE. While I checked and commented on charts, groups were asked to write some research-based analysis questions for the fifth paper (list of questions on Moodle). Groups fixed their “group” charts and then began constructing a sample group analysis paragraph for practice.  That was about all we had time for. Assignment: For Draft #1, write one well-developed analysis paragraph for now. We'll add the rest of the paper later this week.  If you have not been reading the supplementary readings, please work on those. I believe there are some very useful tips for helping you draft this paper. Please remember that Documentary Double-Entries and Binders are due next week. Final Drafts of the Critique will be due on Tuesday as well. Lots to do… stay focused on one task at a time.

G4 - In class today, we went through Vocabulary List #2, then we read "The Cattle of the Sun God" (Handout) and "Father and Son" (p. 1142-1147).
