G1 - New calendar revisions were distributed today. We discussed "Opinions and Social Pressure" and watched clips from a Dateline episode featuring the Asch experiment. I handed out some supplementary reading assignments for students to read prior to writing the Summary. We walked through a chart which describes the steps to Summary writing, then we worked together to begin "chunking" the article into its various stages of thought. At the end of the block, we discussed an essay about five-paragraph essays and discussed how the writing in this class will differ from some of the writing assignments students have been used to from the past. Assignment: Continue "chunking" the Asch article into its various stages of thought. You may have somewhere between 12-16 or so different stages. Then go back and write one clear, complete, and thorough summarizing sentence for each stage of thought. You will share these with your groups in class next time. In addition, please start working through the supplementary readings packet I gave you in class today. This will help you prepare for writing a summary next week.
G2/G3 - Emerson One-Pagers DUE. New calendar revisions were distributed today. We read and discussed an article written by Nathaniel Hawthorne about Ralph Waldo Emerson, then students worked in small groups to discuss various quotations from Emerson's works, then we discussed them as a class. Next, we read through a two-page biography on Henry David Thoreau (handout) and started taking notes over that material. I distributed a copy of the rubric for the one-pager over the excerpts from Walden and described the assignment before the end of the block. Assignment: SAT Vocab. Test #31 next time. Please read the excerpts from Walden and complete the writing assignment. This time, you will be typing up five paragraphs - one paragraph per section. Include a summary and comments about his ideas, what you like/dislike, agree/disagree with along the way. You are not required to use textual evidence this time, but if you do, please be sure to include MLA citations and introduce quotations properly. In total, this will probably be somewhere closer to 1 1/2- 2 pages typed, double-spaced.
