B1 - We began with Grammar Exercise A on page 124. Students turned this in for a quick check. Most of the class did very poorly, so we continued in the Grammar Book with another activity: Practice and Apply at the bottom of page 123. Again, I checked students' work for understanding. Almost everyone did very well on this activity. What I found is that students can fix the errors in context, but they are having a very difficult time identifying what the errors are. So, I assigned an addition worksheet on Run-Ons and Fragments for homework. Next, we began discussing Animal Experimentation. We discussed the red question on page 604 and Jane Goodall's biography and Background Information on page 605. We were able to get about half-way through her essay, "I Acknowledge Mine" before the end of the block. Assignments: Finish reading "I Acknowledge Mine." Don't worry about filling in the claims, support, and counterarguments right now. We'll do that together next time. After you read the rest of the essay, please write a full paragraph response to Question #11 on page 615. Be sure to use at least two quotations from the essay in your response. Be ready for a quiz over this essay next time. In addition, I need you to complete the Grammar Worksheet on Run-Ons and Fragments.
B2 - SAT Vocab. Test #16. After the vocab. test, students completed Exercises A & B in the Grammar Book on page 121. They submitted their work between exercises for quick checks for understanding. Journal: Do animals have rights? Several students shared their journals - good discussion. Next, we read Jane Goodall's biography and Background Information on page 605. Assignment: Read "I Acknowledge Mine." (p. 606+). After you read the essay, please write a full paragraph response to Question #11 on page 615. Be sure to use at least two quotations from the essay in your response. Be ready for a quiz over this essay next time.
B3 - I checked two DEN's today. We discussed both articles for almost the entire block today. Students voted on the movie we will watch to analyze for Cinderella elements. This class chose The Devil Wears Prada. Assignment: Half of you have final drafts of the Comparative Critique due to me next time. If you are revising, I need two clean copies and the rough draft back. If you are taking the predictive score, I need one clean copy with the rough draft. Come to class prepared to take lots and lots of notes over the movie on Monday. :)
